Can Ambush Rengar be reacted into base when no battlefield has units?

During the opponent's turn, Bewitching Spirit is played and I only have an Ambush Rengar in hand. If both battlefields are empty, can I react by playing Rengar to base, or does Ambush still require a battlefield with units?

No. Ambush reaction play still requires a legal battlefield context with units; you cannot use that window to play him to base in this situation.
