Does Shield apply when Mutated Mouser is played defending a battlefield?

Does a unit have Shield when played to a battlefield you control? Will Mutated Mouser have 3 Might immediately when played there? Also, if I cast a damage spell at a Shielded unit that is just holding a battlefield with no combat yet, is it defending?

Shield only applies while a unit is Defending, which requires a Combat to be ongoing at that battlefield (a combat showdown counts). Simply playing Mutated Mouser to a battlefield you control does not give it Shield. If a unit is just holding a battlefield and no enemy units have moved there yet, it is not a Defender and Shield is not active.
