Why didn't Teemo's masks proc before a Sprite's attack trigger when defending?

Attack triggers go on the chain first but resolve last. Teemo's When I Defend resolves before the Sprite's attack triggers, damaging and killing the Sprite while the masks are still waiting to resolve.
