Who is "you" on a battlefield effect when the defender does not control it?

A player asked how the word "you" works on battlefield text when a surprise defender moves in but does not control the battlefield yet.

When a battlefield ability says "you," does it refer to the defending player or the battlefield's controller?

Under rule 187.6.c, "you" in a battlefield's abilities refers to the battlefield's controller. In most cases that would mean the defending player only if they control the battlefield; otherwise no one can use the effect, which is the case for surprise defenders.
