Can I play Cruel Patron to the same battlefield after killing my only unit there?

I control a battlefield with only a Recruit. I kill that Recruit to pay Cruel Patron’s additional cost. Do I lose control before I can play Cruel Patron there?

No. You do not lose control while an item is on the chain. Cruel Patron is on the chain, so you can still choose that same battlefield as the location to play it.
