With Zhonya's or Soraka replacing the outcome, do I still pay Cruel Patron's cost?

I play Cruel Patron, but Zhonya's Hourglass or Soraka, Wanderer changes what would happen to the unit. Even if that replacement changes the final result, do I still pay Cruel Patron's cost in full?

Can I play Cruel Patron to the same battlefield after killing my only unit there?

Source: Unleashed Rules FAQ and Clarifications I control a battlefield with only a Recruit. I kill that Recruit to pay Cruel Patron’s additional cost. Do I lose control before I can play Cruel Patron there?
